Lord of the Rings TV series moves forward with 'multi-season' deal at Amazon

Presented by: Matthew Jackson

Earlier this month news broke that Amazon was in talks with the estate of author J.R.R. Tolkien to produce a TV series based on his epic Lord of the Rings saga. Now, Variety has confirmed that those talks were real, and that the series is in progress.

News broke Monday that the internet giant has secured a "multi-season" commitment for the series, with the possibility of a spinoff series to follow. The series, which does not yet have a release date, will reportedly follow a storyline set before the first book in the trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring. Peter Jackson's prequel trilogy of films based on The Hobbit already attempted to flesh out this territory a bit, but Tolkien's world is vast, and there are many avenues to pursue. The road goes ever on and on, as they say.

The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, head of scripted series for Amazon Studios. “We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

There are still many questions left unanswered here. We don't know when, or where, the series will be set exactly. We don't know which characters it will follow, or even if we'll recognize them. We don't know who's writing, directing, or starring in the series. We don't know if it will maintain the continuity of Peter Jackson's films. Still, in an age when Game of Thrones is dominating the cable landscape and Stranger Things is dominating the streaming world, it makes sense for Amazon to pursue a high-profile genre project like this.

What do you think? Would you tune in for more Lord of the Rings? Can it fill the post-Game of Thrones void?
